What is Career Counseling?

Career counseling is a process of learning about yourself and becoming acquainted with the world of work. Counseling provides students the time to explore interests, abilities, values, skills and personality characteristics as they relate to potential majors and careers. During the counseling session students have the opportunity to discuss their aspirations and concerns about their career prospects. An important goal of career counseling is to help students make realistic career decisions.

How does career counseling work?

At Magner Center for Career Development and Internships career counseling sessions are usually 30 minutes in length and performed with an experienced career counselor. Topics covered range from choice of major, internships, job and career possibilities, resume and interview training, researching companies, graduate school, etc. Students usually meet with a counselor for one or several sessions depending on the needs of the student.

What about career assessments?

An assessment test can help you decide which career path would best fit your interests and personality. Self-assessment tests could be used to help you recognize your real strengths and to learn about your personality so you can decide which major or career to choose. It is also helpful in case you are bored with your major or trapped in a career you do not enjoy. There are a few self-assessments to choose from below:
