What Is an Internship?
According to the National Society for Internships and Experiential
Education (NSIEE), an internship is any carefully monitored work or
service experience in which an individual has intentional learning
goals and reflects actively on what s/he is learning throughout the
experience.
Although some internships are paid the purpose of an internship
is to provide a learning experience for you that enables you to
"try on a career" for a limited time. Internships give
students the opportunity to see if a specific career is right of
them.
An internship will provide you with knowledge you will not be able
to get elsewhere.
Who Should Be Interning?
If you have at least a 2.5 G.P.A. and are looking to build your resume
and gain valuable job skills, then you are the perfect candidate for
participating in Brooklyn College's Career Services Internship Program.
Internships are available during fall, spring and summer terms,
offering experience in a variety of areas such as business, communication,
the arts, education, health care, government, science, social services,
and the environment.
Internship opportunities are available locally and nationally.
You may find yourself working in any of a number of fine arts museums,
government agencies, nonprofit groups, public or private institutions,
or small to large corporations.
Interns have an edge in the job race for very specific reasons:
They've gained direct contact and have established a professional
network;
Interns have demonstrated a willingness to work and to learn; and
They have WORK EXPERIENCE in their desired fields. An internship
will provide you with the opportunity to do substantive work in
a significant position.
Where to Start?
If you are interested in becoming an intern, call for more information,
or stop by the Internship Program office during drop-in hours where
you can sign up for the Internship Skills and Interviewing Workshops
required to participate in the program.
The Internship Program at Brooklyn College focuses on providing
experiential learning in a wide variety of career areas.
The internship experience will enable you to learn the technical,
leadership, and interpersonal skills you will need to succeed in
your future career.
Since internships are competitive, you should meet with the coordinator
at the beginning of the semester, and begin considering interning
as early as your sophomore year.
Important internship information can also be obtained from academic
departments at Brooklyn College.
