What is the Internship Program?

The Internship Program at Brooklyn College focuses on providing experiential learning in a wide variety of career areas. Students can “try on” a career for a semester. The program assists students in obtaining paid/volunteer, part-time, and summer positions in their prospective career fields.

The internship experience enables students to learn the technical, leadership, and interpersonal skills they will need to succeed in their future careers. Students need to start considering internships as early as their sophomore year. The program offers workshops that help students in their early career planning and career decision-making.

What is the value of an Internship?

An internship will provide you with knowledge you will not be able to get elsewhere. Interns have an edge in the job race for very specific reasons:

  • They’ve gained direct contact and have established a professional network
  • Interns have demonstrated a willingness to work and to learn
  • They have WORK EXPERIENCE in their desired fields

What do I have to do as an intern?

As a participant in the Internship Program at Brooklyn College, you are expected to conduct yourself professionally. This means arriving to work on time and when scheduled, dressing according to company policy, etc. You are also expected to establish a contract with your internship supervisor, outlining the details of your work agreement, as well as honor those agreed upon rules. It is recommended that you maintain an ongoing evaluation of your experience and keep in contact with the Internship Program at Brooklyn College throughout your employment.

How do I become an intern?

To become an intern you first must join the Internship Program and do the following:

  • Visit the Internship Program
  • Complete a application form
  • Attend two required workshops: Resume Writing and Interviewing Skills
  • Develop your resume and have it approved by a counselor
  • Write a cover letter and have it approved
  • Make initial contact with prospective employers
  • Apply for the internship

The Internship Program is located in 1303 James Hall.
