Writing a Winning Resume

The resume is generally a one page document that provides pertinent information about yourself to prospective employers. It tells who you are, what you have done, what you do, and what you can do. A resume is nothing more than a one page advertisement for yourself.

A good resume serves as an introduction to the prospective employer, documents your qualifications for the position sought, opens the door for the interview, and provides focus for the interview. The resume does not secure the position for you; it simply gets you in the door.

There are a variety of acceptable formats for the resume. Regardless of the format, it is advisable to keep the resume simple and focused. Resumes should be:

  • Specific and goal directed. It is a targeted marketing tool.
  • Easily scannable with effective use of margins and white space. Most resumes are scanned, not read. All-important titles and specific skills should be highlighted.
  • Limited to one page. For 95% of all college graduates, one page is sufficient.
  • Word processed and laser printed, desktop published or professionally printed.
  • Copied on 20 - 25 lb. rag bond paper (either white or off-white).
  • Free of all spelling errors. A misspelled word can cost you an interview!

A good resume should also:

  • Stress important information and accomplishments. Entry-level applicants are selling their potential.
  • List your GPA (if over 3.0) if you are an accounting major. Optional for other majors but it can’t hurt if it is over 3.0.

Make sure that your resume stresses your accomplishments. Start your sentences with action verbs. Ask yourself if the information you are including says something relevant about you in regard to the job you are seeking. A good resume is an advertisement that lets the reader know what you can do and what you have to offer.

Use the sample resume on the reverse side to create a winning resume.
